Our trip to Nicaragua in February was a success. Laura headed there a bit before Gina and finalized the plans for the house we are building for the family on the farm. Right now 7 people share a one-room house. We decided it would be best to add-on an additional room instead of rebuilding the whole house because the family needed a place to stay during the construction. The room will double the size of the house and will include a roof, flooring, and electricity. (You do need to specify those requirments because not all houses come with those luxuries!) The delivery of materials occurred the day before we left and demolition of a "pool," where the addition will be, began on the morning we headed home. We will post more pictures of the progress as soon as our laisons send us photos.
We were able to visit our friends in Temua to distribute the clothes, uniforms, shoes, and school supplies we had brought with the help of all our donors. We had a police escort and hired a driver to get us to the small town. Once we arrived, the children were happy to see us, as we were happy to see them. We saw some familiar faces and many new ones. This time we took down the names and ages of each child and took a photo of them to help put faces to names and keep track of what size items we might need to bring in the future. We were able to reach out to over 90 children in this area. The students we all very excited to receive everything we brought for them. They especially loved yhe new school supplies. I even think a few children felt as if it was Christmas! It was great to see the smiles on their faces and speak to parents who also expressed their gratitude.
We are looking forward to returning to this area soon!
